 Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, popularly known as Veer Savarkar, was an Indian independence activist,politician,poet,writer, and philosopher. He was born on May 28, 1883, in the village of Bhagur in the Nashik district of present-day Maharashtra, India. Savarkar played a significant role in the Indian independence movement and is considered one of its prominent leaders.Savarkar was a staunch proponent of Hindu nationalism and is often associated with the ideology of Hindutva. He advocated for the liberation of India from British colonial rule and called for a unified Hindu nation. Savarkar is known for his concept of "Hindutva," which emphasized the cultural and political unity of Hindus. He believed that India should be a Hindu Rashtra (nation) and that the Hindu identity should be the defining characteristic of Indian nationalism.During the British colonial period, Savarkar was involved in revolutionary activities against the British rule. He was a member of Abhinav Bharat, a revolutionary organization, and played a key role in the formation of the Free India Society. In 1909, Savarkar was arrested and accused of plotting against the British government. He was convicted and sentenced to two life terms totaling 50 years of imprisonment.While in prison, Savarkar wrote several influential books and poems, including "The First War of Independence," "The Indian War of Independence 1857," and "Hindutva: Who is a Hindu?"

He also formulated the concept of "First War of Independence" to reframe the 1857 uprising as a national struggle for independence.After serving 10 years of his sentence, Savarkar was moved to Ratnagiri Jail in Maharashtra, where he was placed under strict surveillance. He was finally released in 1924, after which he focused on writing and political activities. Savarkar founded the Hindu Mahasabha, a Hindu nationalist political organization, and became its president. He continued to advocate for Hindu unity, the abolition of the caste system, and the promotion of Indian nationalism.Veer Savarkar passed away on February 26, 1966, in Mumbai, India. His contributions to the Indian independence movement and his advocacy for Hindu nationalism have made him a controversial figure in Indian history. While he is revered by many as a nationalist leader and freedom fighter, others criticize his ideology and views, particularly regarding religious and social issues. The legacy of Veer Savarkar continues to spark debates and discussions in India.
